Some people that are considering eating a more whole food plant-centric diet are concerned about getting a gassy stomach. Are you one of them? We’ve all grown up laughing at the little ditty about beans being the magical fruit, haven’t we? Well I’m here to tell you that you have nothing to be concerned about…
Let’s take beans as an example… it’s true that when someone eats beans only occasionally, they do tend to cause problems with gas. The good news is that after eating them regularly for a few weeks, your body adjusts and that issue settles itself right down. Rinsing the broth off both canned and home cooked beans just prior to eating them will help with this also.
Cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts do tend to give some people issues, so if you find this to be the case for you, just don’t eat them on a day that it could land you in a less than desirable situation. Don’t make the mistake of staying away from them altogether though as they are super freakin’ healthy – I’d recommend including them in your meals as often as you possibly can. Plus, just like with beans… the more often you eat those foods, the better your digestive system gets at processing them.
(Side note… did you know that drinking through a straw causes you to swallow quite a bit of air, which guess what… causes gas. Crazy I know, but true.)

Lastly, you can in fact take digestive enzyme supplements. These are often times helpful to people in the early stages of transitioning their diet. You can buy them at various places online. Keep in mind that any time someone changes their diet drastically, even for a few days (like when traveling), it can cause minor digestive or intestinal issues – doesn’t matter what kind of food it is. So don’t worry about it, nothing crazy is going to happen when you decide to eat healthier, except maybe you’ll feel 10 years younger!... nothing crazy is going to happen when you decide to eat healthier, except maybe you'll feel 10 years younger!Click To Tweet
